Probably the most significant update for the end-user for some time was released yesterday. The Package Installer aka KB898461 will finally put an end to downloading an installer with every Windows Update release.

Future updates from Windows Update will use your local copy of the Packager Installer to install correctly on your machine. Indeed, Microsoft are to stop releasing packages with an installer from the Windows update site.

The noteable expection is the Windows Update Catalog site, that will continue to bundle installers with every update.

So what does this mean in English? Basically you won’t be able to use the Windows Update site in future, or Automatic Updates unless you have this update.
